There are, of course, many effluents in this class. Malodourous substances include sulphides, sulphurous mercaptans (thiols), amines and nitro compounds. Electrochemical oxidation of sulphides and thiols produces odourless sulphates and the oxidation/reduction of amines and nitro compounds produces harmless nitrogen gas. DIAMOX electrochemical treatment rapidly destroys bad smells.
Effluents containing chloride produce the sweet smell of hypochlorite which, in turn, participates in the oxidation of ammoniacal nitrogen by the formation of chloramines and nitrogen gas, as described above.
